Studio Gener(ai)tive v3: Urban Furniture 2044
Tan, L. 2024. Studio Gener(ai)tive v3: Urban Furniture in 2044. DFM: Applied Innovation Studio 2, Swinburne University of Technology.
Details
Studio Gener(ai)tive v3 explores the fusion of Generative AI, design fiction, and storytelling. This studio is structured in two phases: use Generative AI to speculate and prototype a future scenario/narrative, then reverse-engineering the imagined product into a design prototypes.
In Phase 1 Narrative, the studio introduces the concept of futures thinking approaches into design and storytelling, situating the studio along the growing post anthropocene movement. In this five weeks, students learn to use Generative AI as:
- a research tool to pool and analyse trends, signals and drivers,
- to decsribe future experiences as narratives, and
- to visualise future environments and scenarios as a storyboard.
In Phase 2 Prototype, the studio guides students to produce designs, prototypes, and a project display by introducing:
- image and artefact analysis,
- 2D to 3D reverse-engineering,
- physical prototyping,
- digital design fabrication techniques, and
- screen design.
The studio concludes with a design showcase for students to storytell their designed future product.
